Motor Racing Australia is pleased to confirm MJS Electrical Products & Supplies as the sponsor of Division B, for the 2024 Pitcher Partners Sydney 300, which will light up Sydney Motorsport Park, on Saturday, May 18.
While Division A is considered the outright class on the timesheets, Division B cars and competitors have featured prominently in the fight for outright honours, right throughout the history of the 300 format, which dates back to its debut at Goulburn’s (now) One Raceway, in 2008, and the Pitcher Partners Sydney 300 is no exception.
13 of the 48 cars, that started the 2023 Pitcher Partners Sydney 300, ran in Division B, including twice division runner-up, Anthony Soole, who finally scored an outright podium finish, with his co-driver Adam Burgess, in last year’s race, after a controversial ending to the 2022 race saw an outright podium result slip out of their grasp.
Fun Fact: Incidentally, that BMW M4 of Anthony Soole has led the most laps in Sydney 300 history.
Mitsubishi Evo entries feature heavily in Division B, as do Honda Civic’s and Integra’s, including those from the BYP racing stable, who won Division B here in 2021 (Jimmy Tran/Drew Hall).
Last year, the Volkswagen Golf of Iain Salteri and Cem Yucel made history here in Sydney, winning Division B, and putting the manufacturer on the outright podium for the first time ever, in the 16-year history of the format. It was also the second time a Volkswagen vehicle has won a division in the Sydney 300, after Troy Derwent and Oskar Butt’s Division E success in 2022.
Most famously, the finish of the 2019 race saw Ed Kreamer and Stephen Thompson cruelly denied an outright win, when they encountered a box full of neutrals, coming off the final corner, on the final lap, in a moment that also saw them lose out on Division B victory as well. Their loss was Phil Armour and David Loftus’s gain – the first of two instances in which a Mazda RX8 has won a division in the Sydney 300.
Cruelly denied in 2019, a Mitsubishi vehicle finally reached the top step of the outright podium, when Dylan Thomas and Cody Brewczynski scored victory in the damp, time-certain race of 2022, in what marked the manufacturer’s fifth outright 300 win – its first outside of Goulburn.
