Did you know, Saturday, May 15, 2021, was the last time the outright winner of a Pitcher Partners Sydney 300, let alone any ‘300’ started from pole position?
That was Todd Herring Racing, in what was his 3rd 300 triumph, and his second consecutive at Sydney Motorsport Park.
A win from pole has only happened once here in Sydney, and five times in the history of the format (42 races, across six different venues, dating back to 2008).
In Cricket terms, the strike-rate for converting pole into victory, in event history, is 11.9%. In the history of the Sydney 300 specifically, it’s 25%.
The pole curse is real here at Sydney Motorsport Park as well. In 2019 (Benny Tran and Matt Longhurst – BYP Racing Honda) and 2022 (Lloyd Godfrey/Josh Buchan), the pole car incurred mechanical issues, and failed to finish the race.
Last year, the BMW M4 of Adrian Wilson, Josh Buchan and Lloyd Godfrey finished down in 23rd place, after being hit with a 5-lap penalty… the second time Godfrey and Buchan have copped that invoice in a Sydney 300, after 2021.
Should the pole car win the 2024 Pitcher Partners #Sydney300, it would be the second time it’s been done in Sydney, the sixth overall, and end a 1099-day drought, since the last time the pole car lead the field to the chequered flag!
